Fiscal failure: GOP bill would undo potential $2 billion in annual USPS savings

Back in January, Gov. Bobby Jindal said that the GOP needs to “stop being the stupid party.” It seems that his advice fell on deaf ears.

@fredthompsonI am conservative as almost anyone, please tell me there is not a GOPbill in Congress to keep Saturday USPS delivery?

Alas:

Really? RT @drewhampshire: Oh, for Pete’s sake… RT @washtimes: GOP bill orders USPS to keep Saturday service wtim.es/W2qYpH

— Stephen Hayes (@stephenfhayes) March 5, 2013

The order, which goes against Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe’s cost-cutting five-day weekly service plan, is attached to a House Appropriations bill as a rider. Remember when the GOP stood for fiscal conservatism? Yeah, those were fun times.

House GOP spending bill would make USPS keep six-day delivery, bc Republicans are for smaller government. #headdesk washingtontimes.com/news/2013/mar/…

Sure if the poor national security doesn’t end us first, bankruptcy will. But sure @gop, focus on Saturday mail. #smh

Re: Saturday mail, this is why many on the right don’t trust you @gop. Your instincts on simple fiscal issues are lousy.

WHO CARES ABOUT SATURDAY POSTAL SERVICE?

Junk mail advertisers? RT @melissatweets: WHO CARES ABOUT SATURDAY POSTAL SERVICE?

— Ron Bischof (@rjbischof) March 5, 2013

Exactly.

So, who’s bright idea was it in the GOP to try to force the USPS to keep Saturday service? #PrimaryFodder

Inquiring minds want to know.

GOP Rep. Darrell Issa, chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, expressed support for Donahoe’s proposal. Now what?

Darrell Issa, call your office washingtontimes.com/news/2013/mar/…

Someone needs to smack some sense into the GOP:

I want a GOP that’s pushing for opening up postal delivery to competition, not borrowing money to pay for Saturday deliveries. #BetterIdeas

— Ben Howe (@BenHowe) March 5, 2013

Hey Republicans, do your jobs.
