It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s two Olympic skiers.

Thursday’s Photo of the Day gets up close and personal with Germany’s Andreas Schauer and Norway’s Didrik Bastian as they fly high in the men’s freestyle skiing cross 1/8 final.

The action-packed photo, snapped at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park, was captured by award-winning Getty photographer Cameron Spencer. Much of the intensity in the image may be attributed to the nature of this competition.

“One of the most exciting events in the latter part of the is the ski cross,” Spencer said. “Four riders head down a hill through myriad turns and jumps all at the same time. They have to get to the bottom of the hill as quickly as possible while navigating the course and avoiding collisions with each other.”

He also spoke to the picture’s ability to show the audience the event as they athletes might experience it. “You feel like you are part of the action and can easily see just how close together these riders are as they explode off a jump early in the run,” he said.

France swept the podium in the event’s final with Jean-Frédéric Chapuis taking first, Arnaud Bovolenta snagging second and Jonathan Midol grabbing third.
