7 Steps For the Hajj with Dates
Hajj is the major yearly religious event in Islam, and the rituals of Hajj are conducted over the course of five or six days, formally commencing on the 8th Dhul Hijjah and finishing on the 13th of the same month. Here are the seven steps to perform Hajj.
7 steps of the Hajj in Urdu English
1. Ihraam / 8th Dhul Hijjah
The assumption of Ihraam is the first step of the Hajj and represents a spiritual transformation that is integral to the ritual. Pilgrims are required to wear the Ihraam, a two-piece white robe representing purity and simplicity, at the Miqaat (specified sites surrounding and beyond the holy city of Mecca).
2. Arafah / 9th Dhul Hijjah
The Day of Arafah is a pivotal part of the Hajj. The Standing at Arafah takes place today on the plain of Arafah. During this ceremony, pilgrims pray for God to forgive them and make a spiritual vow to live by for the rest of their life.
It is the day on which Allah (swt) finished His religion, bestowed His final favors onto His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and decided to make Islam his religion of choice, making it one of the holiest days for Muslims. The Day of Arafah is the holiest day of the Hajj.
3. Muzdalifah / 9th Dhul Hijjah
Muslim tourists travel to Muzdalifah after sunset on the ninth day of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah. Sometimes they get there at night because there are so many people. When travellers get to Muzdalifah, they pray the Maghrib and ‘Isha prayers together. The ‘Isha prayer, however, is cut down to just two rakats.
4. Tawaf and Sa’i / 10th Dhul Hijjah
After taking on the Ihraam, the first rite of the Hajj is to do the Tawaf. The Tawaf rite requires Muslims to make a counterclockwise walk around the Ka’aba, a sacred location, seven times. At the Multazam, the space between the Ka’aba and the Mataf (the circular area where people conduct Tawaf and perform prayers), pilgrims must pause to pray.
Sa’i, the ritual walk between Safa and Marwa’s hills, is performed on the third day of the Hajj. Pilgrims perform this ceremony by making seven trips between the two hills. This ceremony is a reminder of Hagar’s (Ibrahim’s second wife) frantic hunt for water in the desert for her newborn baby Ishmael.
5. Rami (The Stoning of the Devil) / 11th Dhul Hijjah
Pilgrims go to Mina, which is a part of Mecca, to do the “Stoning of the Devil.” To do this, you throw rocks at three stone towers that stand for the devil. This rite shows that people don’t want to be tempted by the devil, and it reminds them that they only want to worship one God.
6. Eid al-Adha / 12th Dhul Hijjah
On the 10th, 11th, and 12th days of Dhul Hijjah (following special Eid prayers), those who are eligible to give Qurbani must sacrifice an animal or make a donation equivalent to the value of a sacrificial animal.
7. Farewell Tawaf (al-Wida) / 13th Dhul Hijjah
As you prepare to go from Makkah, this Tawaf will be your last. The Hajj concludes with this final Tawaf. Time spent inside the walls of al Masjid al Haram is time well spent. Pray and meditate in whatever way you see fit.
